From Restless Journeys to Rooted Impact
In the early days of Google, Tharien Pieterse was hand‑coding websites in South Africa. Curiosity soon carried her to London’s high‑powered media world, but the faster she ran, the further she drifted from work that felt human. A soul‑searching sabbatical through India, South, and Central America uncovered a different rhythm, one where tech serves people, not the other way round.
There, among the trees and stories of indigenous wisdom, the seeds of Umuthi were planted. With an etymology rooted in African language, and still spoken today in isiZulu and isiXhosa (also pronounced umthi), it means “tree” and by extension, medicine. It reminds us that business can be both deeply rooted and capable of expansive growth.
Her first collaborator was Dom Catto, a yoga teacher turned content specialist who saw the parallels between mindful sequencing and evergreen content flows, demonstrating that curiosity can outpace credentials and that AI can sound as warm as a good cup of tea.
Soon after, Nick Catto joined, bringing 15 years of business‑building experience and a conviction that real scale comes from systems, not sleepless nights.
